Connection is not a “soft skill”—it’s a core human need.

As Brené Brown reminds us:

“We are hardwired for connection. It’s what gives purpose and meaning to our lives.”

When leaders create genuine connection, workplaces become more innovative, resilient, and engaged. When disconnection dominates, we see the opposite: absenteeism, turnover, and a decline in discretionary effort.

I once worked for a business where connection wasn’t just spoken about—it was lived. From day one, I felt part of something bigger: connected to purpose, people, and the overarching mission.

Leaders invested in connection at every level—one-on-one, team, and organisation-wide. The result? I understood my value, felt supported, and willingly gave my best. My commitment and discretionary effort soared.

The Neuroscience of Connection

Research shows our brains reward us for connecting. Positive social interactions trigger oxytocin, strengthening bonds, building trust, and motivating collaboration

According to Psychology Today:

Strong connections help us stay positive, even in difficult situations.

They provide belonging, reducing stress and threat responses.

They even improve health and longevity

On the flip side, weak or absent connections reduce motivation, stifle collaboration, and decrease productivity.

Business Impact

As Forbes notes, “The value of human connection in shaping business success has never been greater”

A study by Enboarder found that:

  • 94% of employees are more productive when they feel connected.
  • Connected employees are half as likely to leave within a year.
  • They’re 4x more likely to report high job satisfaction

Belinda Gates captured this beautifully:

“Deep human connection is…the purpose and the result of a meaningful life – and it will inspire the most amazing acts of love, generosity and humanity.”

Practical Steps for Leaders

A Reflection for You

👉 What makes you feel deeply connected in your work?

👉 What’s one small ritual you could start this week to build connection in your team?

Leaders who prioritise connection don’t just build better teams—they create spaces where people thrive. As Simon Sinek puts it:

“A team is not a group of people who work together. A team is a group of people who trust each other.”

And trust is born through connection.

Here’s to leading with connection—on every level.
